That explains a lot.
Because Barlow named some of his children after states and later Presidents. (examples follow)

Missouri Fiske
Tennessee Fiske
James Knox Polk Fiske
Andrew Jackson Fiske
Martin Van Buren Fiske

Barlow doesn't seem quite so excentric now that we know he probably knew these people.
