My family also spelled Fissel with 2 L's, but it seems we droped the second L for unknown reasons in the late 1800's. I have seen family tombstones in Pennsylvania from the late 1800's (especially the civil war era) that show 2 L's. Do you know if your family migrated to Ohio from the central PA area (Altoona, & Harrisburg)? I know that my family moved to Ohio in the early 1920's and settled in the Youngstown-Warren area due to the jobs in the steel mills.
