It was great to hear from a Fitter researcher after all this time of silence! Unfortunately, I dont think I can help much. I found your Alfred Maxwell in the 1851 census. There were 30 or so other names fron Appleby living in Birmingham alone. My 1851 census disc only covers Warwicks, Devon & Norfolk so couldnt look up Leicestershire. I have a Catherine Fitter bapt 25 Jan 1803 at St Martins, Birmingham (IGI) who I had fancied for the Alfred Maxwell marriage of 1825. The census data makes your interpretation look better though. Do you have any other Fitters. ALL of mine are in the Birmingham/Aston area.
