I have been researching the Chesser/Cheshire family for 30 years and many of the old settlers of Hampshire Co. VA (now WV), Warren County, OH (Salem and Harlan Twp.) Shelby County (Jackson, Washington, Noble, Hendricks and later Shelby and Addison Twps.), Marion, Johnson, Tipton and Howard Counties of Indiana. This family of Chessers is in nearly every state now. Older allied families include: Fitzrandolph and later Randolph, Spurling, Hill, Stiles, Goodpasture, Peters, Runyan, Custer, Sharp, Lynch, Eberhart,Cox, Moore, Collins, Benham, Luthers, Dewitt, Constable, Booram, Laymon, Higgins, Smith, Pearson, Drake, Clarke, VanBenthusen, another Cheshire line, Miller, Lemar, Lee, Shaw, Patterson, Guile, Law, Salla, Ross, Kopp, another line of Moores, Barmore, Doty, Goff, Reece, Ryse, Kanouse, Donica, Harry, Critser, Nelis, Nail, Keller, Johnson, French, Taylor, Fry, Kissel, Kuenzel, Havemann, Oberwitte, Arbuckle, Brooks and many, many more. My data base has over 7600 individuals all related by blood or marriage and grows everyday. I have photos of Salem and Harlan Twp. Morrow, the Keller Cem. from a distance as it was guarded by junkyard dogs when I visited in the 1980s and couldn't get out of the car. William Chesser b. 1798 VA and d. 1819 OH m. 1816 OH Sarah Dewitt had a daughter Mary Jane Chesser b. abt. 1816. Her descendants are from her marriage to Alonzo Stiles. William's brother James P. Chesser b. 1800 VA, d. 1858 IN m. Sarah Ann Spurling b. 1803 VA d. 1851 IN in 1820 OH are my husband's 2nd great-grandparents. James 2nd m. Rosannah Lee Lemar in 1852 IN.
