William Fitzwater (1841-1916) OH Post by Linda Baroom
Dec. 30, 2008 "post" is located on Rootsweb Archiver Message Board which states William's father's name on his death certificate is "Schaega Fitzwater" Cert. located in Vol. 1883, Cert #15782 3-11-1916 Butler Co., OH.My interpretation is George. His mother is stated to be Catherine Everhart and Linda is attempting to identify her.
Death Certificate of Amanda (Hedrick) Fitzwater (born TN),wife of William lists her parents as Henry Hedrick and Mary Graham. This couple married Jasper, Marion Co., TN, 3 Jul 1864, after William was discharged from the Civil War Service.Amanda was married previously and had a daughter Elizabeth forn Dec 1861.On one pension paper William filled out she is Amanda Barns, and another she is Amanda Hedrick - same surname as parents on her death certificate.
There is nothing in William's enlistment or pension papers that give his parents. He enlisted for 3 years 20 Dec 16 1862, age 20, in Warren Co., OH and was discharged 12 Aug 1865.He presented a Family Bible Record from an American Bible Society Bible published 1858 for his birth record. No note of parents. He says he was born in Warren Co., OH.I've always wished to view this record.
As for William Fitzwater's mother being Catherine Everhart - as stated there is no marriage record available.George was born 1819 and it is important to know the birth year of Catherine. f she is the daughter of William Chesser and Sarah DeWitt, she would have been born 8 months beyond his death, or before which would mean she was the same age as George and could very well have been his wife.It would not be uncommon for her to acquire the surname Everhart being adopted by a step-father or just "assuming" his surname.
As to the explanation of "Frank Minick brother" (born 1858 OH) in 1880 and 1900 census relationship to William Fitzwater' - could be step-brother or 1/2 brother. But, there seems to be problems with Catherine Everhart, and Catherine Hilderbrandt that need to be resolved. From this post it would seem more likely Catherine Everhart (Chesser) was the wife of George Fitzwater who drowned in 1845 and mother to William Fitzwater born 1841.
The "confusion" between "Schaega" and "George" as William's father would be solved by other documents written by the same individual around the same date and comparing the handwriting. However, I have seen many records with "G" that look like "S" and thus confusing.
Many times marriages in early 1800's and before were in church records, or minister's private records. The laws in OH of those early years allowed legal marriages without being recorded, as they did in many states in our early history. Also, recorded vital records were recording dates and not the actual date of the event. As well as the one recording had up to 6 months if they wanted to report the event, and many events were not recorded.
Is there an Obit on William Fitzwater in the county?I never located one.I was told by his grandson that there was a memorial service every Memorial Day at old section of Monroe Cemetery (MT PLEASANT cemetery) and his grave. In his pension papers affidavits were submitted by Gatch Fitzwater, Isaac Boughman, who lived by him for 10 years Frank Morton and George W. Miller who knew him for 22 years.
