I married into the Fivecoat from WI in 1973. I have been divorced since 1993. Shortly after divorcing I was contacted by a University professor from IL or IN who was trying to trace the Fivecoat family from the WI area. My ex's family had always believed the name was of English origin. The gentleman who contacted me informed that the name really is German in origin. Three brothers left Bohemia which was later changed to Germany. They settled in England for a brief period before deciding to migrate to the United States.
They arrived and settled in WI. One brother decided to try his luck West of the Rockies and yet another decided to move South and settled in TX. The Brother who settled West of the Rockies added an "e" at the end of "Fivecoat" in order to be able to trace his own lineage. He kept extensive records of births, marriages, deaths, etc. The logs he kept were handed down to the eldest son of each generation to keep up with.
According to this Professor, all Fivecoats in this country are descendants of the original three who arrived here from England. That was almost 18 yrs ago and I have since lost the man's contact info. However, I have reason to believe that what he said was true as I remember my ex and his sisters describing their great Granny Fivecoat as being full blooded Bohemian.
I don't know where you are from or where you are currently located but you may have luck trying your search with Fivecoats from the Northwest. It's possible you may come across someone out there from the same family as the man who talked to me re: the family records.
My ex- died about 11 yrs ago and his father is currently in a nursing home. He had a brother who also did extensive research on the family but I have no idea if he is still living or even coherent. They hailed from the Mt. Hope/Fennimore WI area. Richard Fivecoat (ex-father in-law) & his brother Emil are descendants of Dean Fivecoat from Mt Hope WI. Richard had 3 children, Arthur D. Fivecoat (deceased), Rebecca Fivecoat-Veach (Oshkosh WI), and Diana Fivecoat (where abouts unknown).
I'm sorry I couldn't provide more definite contact information. Good luck in your search.
