"Poisoned on colored candy
Findley, Ohio December 25
The family of J. Fivecoat, consisting of himself, wife and four daughters lie at death's door.
It is feared as the result of eating cheap Christmas candy. Physicians worked with them all last night,
but there are small hopes for their recovery. It is thought that the coloring in the candy poisoned their systems."
Sources the following newspapers: News Herald, Hillsboro, Ohio on Thursday December 28, 1899 & Stark County Democrat, Canton, Ohio on December 26, 1899 with exactly same notice as above.
I haven't yet had time to research this but hopefully this may help another researcher.
