Funeral in BostonPublished in The Palm Beach Post July 18, 1998 Joseph Nathanson, an educator, athlete, coach, and founder of summer camps for boys and girls, died Friday at Manor Care Nursing Home in Boca Raton, Fla., of complications after a stroke. He was 85. Mr. Nathanson was born in Millis and graduated from Millis High School. He also graduated from Cushing Academy and the University of New Hampshire, where he played football and baseball. After college, he played semi-pro football for the Portland Sagamores. Mr. Nathanson later received a graduate degree in adminstration from Harvard University. He also taught part-time at Northeastern University. He served in the Army during World War II as a captain and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Mr. Nathanson taught and coached in Wayland and later became principal of Newton South High School-Goodwin House. He worked in the Newton public school system for 35 years. In 1947, he co-founded Camp Manitou for Boys in Smithfield, Maine, and, in 1951, he founded Camp Matoaka for Girls, also in Smithfield. He leaves his wife, Midge (Richmond); a daughter, Susan, of Wellesley; two sons, Michael of Boca Raton, Fla., and Peter of Paris; two sisters, Alice Jacobs of Tamarac, Fla., and Shirley Silver of Cape Cod; two brothers, Abraham of Newton and Norman of Cape Cod; and five grandchildren. A funeral will be held Tuesday at noon in Levine Chapel in Brookline. Burial will be in Boylston Lodge Cemetery in West Roxbury.
