In Peter Matthiessen's semi-fictional/historic novel "Killing Mr. Watson" he mentions a legend that part of Watson's forced labor included a Deputy Sherriff from Key West Florida-and that he was unable to find confirmation for this. Now interestingly enough in the issue of February/March 1981 of "American Heritage" is a
autobiography of a Marie St. John whose father once worked for Watson and who had been a former Deputy Sherriff-although he was now a Sharecropper/farmer. This is ment strikly as a comment on a Urban Legend-and for reference only.
