Joan,
Here are some excerpts from "Holmesteading, The History of Holmes County, Florida" by E. W. Carswell, 1986:

Page 115--Twenty-nine citizens of what had already been established as Noma by U.S. postal authorities and the Louisville & Nashville Railroad gathered at noon on June 27, 1904, at W. H. Gilbert's store to form a municipal corporation. They voted unanimously to incorporate and to approve a seal containing the work, "Noma."

Page 116--Both Esto and Noma had been named two years earlier by L & N Railroad officials after they had conferred with some residents of each community. They explained that the word "Noma" was of Greek derivation, alluding to "lush pastures."

Hope this helps! Nancy
