Probate papers 1886, Ft. Myers, question

I am seeking estate papers for someone who died in Ft. Myers in 1886. It is confusing to figure out where to check. I know that Lee County was formed about 1888, and I think there was a courthouse fire in Monroe County about 1887.

I wrote to Monroe County, and they were most gracious. However, they found nothing at all in the way of estate papers. I have not yet pursued the deed search, but I do intend to when I narrow the years down.

Now my question:
Between the fire and the county change, I think it might be a lost cause. However, I do wonder if there is a chance that the estate records could possibly be found in Lee County.

Hoping that a knowledgeable person can give me some tips here. One thing that puzzled me greatly is the date they began their search in Monroe County. I specifically stated the death date of 1886, but they only began searching in 1888. I assume there was a reason for this, and I do hate to act dumb about it. Perhaps the fire.

Would appreciate the help.
