Fishing for information about my gggrandfather, Stephen Keogh, who died at Key West on March 21, 1896. He was a chief engineer of the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service, aka the Revenue Marine Service, a predecessor of the Coast Guard. According to family lore he died in a dock collapse. He had been assigned since 1889 to the Louis McLane, a ship that summered in Baltimore and wintered in Key West. His civilian residence was in Philadelphia and that is where he was buried.
Any info that would shed light on him or the dock collapse would be most welcome. What old newspapers are still available that might make mention of this?
In addition, any general info about life at Key West during the late 1800s, in particular for a member of the Revenue Cutter Service (where he might have lived and worked, etc.) would also be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
