Mr. William H. Herndon passed away on January 22, 2004, at the age of 86. He was the son of John Herndon and Trudie Belle Stewart, who were born in Georgia.
At eighteen years of age Bill Herndon enlisted in the Civilian Conservation Corp, left his parent’s home in Calhoun County, Florida, and was sent to the CCC camp at Niceville, Florida. God blessed Mr. Herndon with the entertaining gift of storytelling, and he enjoyed talking about his early years in the CCC. He was a wealth of information about the Choctawhatchee National Forestry Service. He also had the distinction of being among the original group of men who transferred from the forestry service to Eglin Air Force Base’s Jackson Guard.
After sixty-eight years in Boggy Bayou, he is gone, but not forgotten.
