Hi Natasha! You have another cousin! Ben Joyner was my father's (Marvin Carnley's) great uncle. His sister Martha Joyner Ward was my father's grandmother. At least 2 of Martha's children married Barfields. It appears from my research the Joyners came to Alabama at the end of the Civil War in 1865 possibly from North Carolina. Martha's husband William Ward was a confederate soldier and captured at the end of the war in April 1865 in Raleigh North Carolina while he was in the Pettigrew Hospital #13 with an amputated right arm. He then came back to Henry County Alabama apparently with Martha Joyner and her family in tow and they married in July 1865 (having their first child Eliza Jane in February 1866...you can do the math on that one). Martha Ward and her family moved to Orange Hill in Washington County around 1875 and then Alford in Jackson County sometime around 1899. They then moved back to Washington County in the early 1900s. I don't believe her siblings, the Joyners ever left Washington County once they moved to Florida. Anyway, it was said that the Joyners were indians. If they were from North Carolina they were probably Cherokee. I have a photo of Martha that was taken just before she died in 1936 in Washington County. She was obviously very old but her hair was still black. My father looked a lot like Martha (black hair also) before he passed away at age 86 in 2007. Ben and Martha's father was John Joyner according to Martha's death certificate. My father remembered Big Ben Joyner and his son Little Ben. He said at one time Big Ben lived up around Pine Log. I plan to call Edna Ogburn to see if I could perhaps visit with her and get additional information. I hope we can meet sometime.
