I'm glad to see that someone is daring to question the family traditions! I'd always heard that "Samuel the Immigrant" was "Scotch-Irish" but have found the name Flake absolutely non-existent in Scotland. There is also a common misconception in the USA that "Scotch-Irish" is any mix of the two nationalities. It should be "Scots-Irish" and specifically refers to those Presbyterian Scots who were encouraged to resettle in Ulster by William of Orange, hence today's "Orangemen," the Protestants in Northern Ireland.

Where do you get the data re his origins on Isle of Wight?

Isn't it also possible that the name is a variant of Flack or Fleck, which are more common names?

Family tradition also seems to think that we are dealing with a person born about 1700 who wrote a will in 1802[!!] I tend to think that there are possibly two people here, i.e. father and son, rather than just one. Longevity seems to be a family trait, but for someone to live over 100 years in those days must have been unheard of! There is also a gap at some point in the families attributed to Samuel which leads me to believe that the two families were not one.

I would love to see someone unravel the years of slip-shod genealogical practices that have made such a mess of the family tree.

I am a descendant of William Jordan Flake. Are you, too?
