James M. Flake/Agnes H. Love's Slaves

Judy,

I have information about the slaves owned by James Madison Flake and Agnes Haley Love of Anson County, North Carolina and Kemper County Mississippi.

They apparently had several of whom I have no names except the two that went to Utah with them: Green Flake, a man of about 20; Liz, a girl of 10 when they left for Mississippi, An African-American woman unnamed in the history I have went to Nauvoo, Illinois with them. I don't know what she did from there.

Green Flake lived in Salt Lake City for a number of years, then moved to Idaho where he died. There was not long ago an article about him in the Salt Lake Tribune.

Liz, now a woman, went to San Bernardino, California with James and Agnes. James was killed there in an accident. Liz came back to Utah with Agnes staying with her until she died, a young woman.

Liz married, had three children, and is said to have been a wealthy woman. Two of her children are said to have come to be distinguished by the honors of men. I have no record of whom she married nor of her children's names.

The history is too long to copy here, but I would be glad to furnish you with a copy if you wish. Please feel free to email me if I can be of further help.

I'm not sure of this, but it seems to me that
Liz was named as a colonizer to the San Bernardino area. There is a monument on the lawn of the San Bernardino County Courthouse that I believe lists all their names as early pioneers.

Best wishes in your searching.

Faun
