Re: Samuel Flake's Birth

In Reply to: Samuel Flake's Birth by Michael Flake of 535

Michael, you wrote ...”Other individuals have SAMUEL FLAKE listed as ROBERT FLAKE the 3rd’s son, being born 1740 and later marriage (to) SARAH FLAKE at the age of approximately 21. That would also place his age in a reasonable time frame regarding SAMUEL FLAKE’s obtaining land grants in Anson Co. which is documented. This puts his death and age in the correct time fram(e) and now SARAH’s marriage to a man her own age makes sense....”

However, while what you write is “logical,” I do not believe we should be too quick to ignore or forget the references to a SAMUEL FLAKE in Orange County & the Granville District in the mid-1750's, or prior to that in Amelia and Lunenburg Counties, Virginia starting around 1749 when a SAMUEL FLAKE obtains land. There are even earlier references to a SAMUEL FLAKE in ...I think Nottaway Co., VA?

If I recall correctly, the SAMUEL FLAKE in Virginia “disappears” from Virginia at about the time a SAMUEL FLAKE appears in Orange Co., NC. - and remember, Orange Co., NC is the center of the Regulator Movement which might help explain SAMUEL’s involvement after his arrival in Anson. Also, the SAMUEL FLAKE of Orange Co., “disappears” at about the same time frame a SAMUEL FLAKE appears in Anson County.

Doesn’t the HARRIS FAMILY of Anson County also trace back to this same area of Virginia, Amelia county specifically? I don’t have my HARRIS or FLAKE research materials at hand, so perhaps I’m remembering incorrectly.

Another point too. You mention family names - I just do not recall many “ROBERTS” among the descendants of SAMUEL FLAKE. Did our SAMUEL have a son named ROBERT? I do recall SAMUEL having a son name THOMAS FLAKE and the SAMUEL FLAKE of Orange Co., NC., appears to possibly have a kinsman named THOMAS FLAKE as that name also appears in the Orange Co. records.

Also, my memory is the name “JORDAN” is also found in the above general areas of Virginia. I forget the exact county now, but the names of two individuals have long stuck in my memory - “RIVER JORDAN” and “RIVER FLOOD.” If I recall correctly, the two were kinsmen. These two names are almost as “good” as “SNOWFLAKE FLAKE of Snowflake, AZ.” <grin>

The land records in Amelia County would probably place that SAMUEL’s birth at least as early as 1728, and probably earlier. I forget the dates for the reference in Nottaway County,VA.

Regards, Jay
