To Constance or anyone else who is looking for Flakes over here in England, I would suggest that you do some research in Hampshire. That is adjacent to Isle of Wight, and it makes sense that, if those settlers in Virginia came from that area - IOW/Hampshire - they would have taken some of their place names with them, as was the custom.

One of the chief problems I've seen is that Americans have relied too heavily on the IGI, which was not allowed to film in a lot of English parishes. This would appear to be the case for certain areas of Hampshire where, if you check out historical records, there was a huge concentration of Flakes - the only one in England or anywhere in the UK, as a matter of fact. In earlier census returns, the Flakes appear to be entirely in Hampshire and only later fanned out a bit into neighbouring counties.

If you check on the freebmd site where UK records post-1837 are becoming freely available, you can pick up about 3 or 4 registration districts where all the Flakes were located.

Unfortunately, it would appear that, unless you have other resources, the only way to get to earlier records in this area would be to go to the county record office for this area and do some original research into parish records.

Note: The civil registration district names you will see are not synonymous with parish names. A district would contain several parishes. The parishes in a registration district could be found on GENUKI.

I'd be interested to know if anyone has tried this.

Diane [a descendant of Samuel Flake, but living in England]
