Flandreau Cemetery New Rochelle

I discovered this piece of New Rochelle history back in November or December. Since then I have been attempting to gain access to begin a restoration process. I have finally worked that out. The biggest issue is removing all the weeds and bramble. The city has said that if I organize cleanup and notify them that will come cart it away.

Taken from left hand corner (almost) at the street:

I have placed a temporary sign duly noting the location is the "Flandreau Cemetery, New Rochelle, NY". It is a computer printout incased in sturdy, rather solid, shadow box frame. I placed a 10 pound bag of river rocks around the bottom so hopefully it will not erode too much. I propped the sign up against the telephone pole shown in the second photo link.

I just purchased some of those brown paper bags for yard waste. I have found several pictures on Mr. Mosher's page, google maps, and google images, and livemaps etc. You can see the change in the property in some of the photos. I must say things have gotten worse since Mr. Mosher's visit in 2001. But neighbors or Mr. Mosher or someone must be trying to do some good periodically as the space is improved from what I have seen in googlemaps.

My husband and I worked for about 20 minutes today. Not much but it is a start. Some neighbors walking by expressed interest. One mentioned how the street light is on 24-7 over the cemetery. Not sure if this is intentional or a faulty system. I have emailed the Department of Public Works to verify on her behalf.

I will attempt to periodically post progress on the preservation efforts. I would hate to see this piece of town history go to waste. It saddens me that so much has already been lost. But perhaps we can save what is left and return respect to the hallowed space in the future.

The cleanup will be extensive. But if small steps are made constantly the big picture can be reached. I have someone coming out on Sunday to meet with me and give an estimate on roughly what it would cost to have a landscape specialist remove at least SOME (I have no funding yet) of the bramble. Also I am in touch with a headstone preservation historical society to see if anything can be done to preserve what is left. The hardest part is clearing the bramble to find the remaining stones. But I will at least make a valiant effort to do so.

I have written a letter to make the neighbors aware of my activities to alleviate concern. I have yet to mail these. I hope to do so tomorrow.
