My apologies for the excessive length of this message, folks.

Elijah Flandreau the cooper, in the various incarnations, is keeping me challenged.

Here are all the listings for _any_ Elijah Flandreau, cooper, that I have from NYC directories:

Dogget’s NYC Directories
1842-3: Flandrau, Elijah, cooper. 36 S. William, h. 64 Norfolk
1846-7: Flandrau, Elijah, cooper. 46 Pearl, h. 155 Rivington

1848-9: Flandrau, Elijah, cooper. 4 Coenties sl. h. 155 Rivington
1849-50: Flandrau, Elijah, cooper. 36 S. William, h. 141 Norfolk

Rode’s NYC Directory
1850-1: Flandrau, Elijah, cooper. 46 Pearl, h 123 Orchard

Trow’s Directory of the City of New York:
1852-3 Flandrew, Elijah, cooper, 46 Pearl

Year ending May 1, 1862: Flandrau, Elijah, cooper, 46 Pearl, h. 82 Suffolk
Year ending May 1, 1863: Flandrau, Elijah, cooper, 46 Pearl, h. 82 Suffolk
Year ending May 1, 1864: Flandrau, Elijah, cooper, 46 Pearl, h. 82 Suffolk
Year ending May 1, 1865: Flandrau, Elijah, cooper, 46 Pearl, h 182 Suffolk
Year ending May 1, 1866: Flandau, E & Son coopers, Franklin mkt

Appears in the 1869 New York City directory:
Flandreau Elijah P., cooper, 322 Wash'n, h B'kh (Brooklyn Heights, or an overstriked B'kln?)
The business also appears as:
Flandreau & Bennett, coopers, 322 Wash'n

Trow’s Directory of the City of New York:
Year ending May 1, 1883: Flandrau, Elijah, cooper, 69 Pearl, h. 123 Sands, B’klyn
Year ending May 1, 1883: Flandreau, Elisha, cooper, 204 West

1889-90 Brooklyn, NY directory:
Elijah P. Flandreau, cooper, West N. Y., 272 S. 5th, Brooklyn, NY

Okay, so, the 1866 listing suggests that Daniel A. Flandrow is Elijah's son (rather than a brother, for instance), since Daniel also appears in the 1866 Directory as a cooper at Franklin Market, and he shared the same home address as Elijah from 1859. Here are Daniel's listings:

Trow’s Directory of the City of New York:
Year ending May 1, 1859: Flandreau, Daniel A., cooper, 46 Pearl, h 82 Suffolk
Year ending May 1, 1861: Flandreau, Daniel A., cooper, 46 Pearl, h 82 Suffolk
Year ending May 1, 1862: Flandreau, Daniel A., cooper, 46 Pearl, h 82 Suffolk
Year ending May 1, 1863: Flandrau, Daniel A., cooper, 46 Pearl, h 82 Suffolk
Year ending May 1, 1864: Flandrau, Daniel A., cooper, 46 Pearl, h. N. Rochelle
Year ending May 1, 1864: Flandrau, E & D.A., coopers, 46 Pearl
Year ending May 1, 1865: Flandrau, Daniel A., cooper, 46 Pearl
Year ending May 1, 1866: Flandrau, Daniel A., cooper, Franklin mkt, h 82 Suffolk
Year ending May 1, 1866: Flandrau, E & Son, coopers, Franklin mkt

Mary's suggestion that there are two Elijahs, father and son, is a handy suggestion because it solves a problem with calling Elijah P Flandreau the father of Daniel A. Flandreau. Specifically, Chris Mosher has listed Elijah P. Flandreau as being born in 1829 -- it would be virtually impossible for him to be the father of a cooper in business in 1859.

Of course, that also tosses out my theory that Elijah P. is the son of Peter and Lola Potter Flandreau of Eastchester.

What would be really handy would be some more census entries for Elijah Flandreau -- any of the Elijahs.

Unfortunately I've only been able to come up with census entries that I can't tie to these individuals:

1840 census in New York City’s 13th ward, page 222:
Elijah Flandro, head of a family of seven (male and female between 30 and 39, 1 male 15-19, 2 females 10-14, one male 5-9, and one male under 5), one of whom was employed in manufacture or trades.
[This one might be one of the right ones, but it doesn't tell us much.]

1870 census for 10th Ward 5th District, New York City, page 49 [printed page 199]:
dwelling 72, family 486
Flandreau, Elish, 74, Male, White, Cooper, $700 in real estate, $500 in personal estate, born in New York, male citizen over 21
“, Sarah M., 68, Female, White, Keeping House, born in New York
Brown, Mary E., 54, Female, Black, Servant, born in New York, cannot write
-
dwelling 72, family 487
Lane, Wm. P., 53, Male, White, Brushmaker, $800 in personal estate, born in New York, male citizen over 21
“, Sarah M., 42, Female, White, Keeping House, born in New York
“, Annie M., 18, Female, White, born in Massachusetts
“, Charly F., 16, male, White, works on nautical instruments, born in Massachusetts
Flandrue, Rachael, 26, Female, White, born in New York
Donaldson, Henry, 38, Male, White, Book Keeper, born in England, parents foreign born, male citzen over 21
Moore, John, 45, Male, White, Music Teacher, born in Prussia, parents foreign born
Chamberlin, H.E., 35, Male, White, no occupation, born in Massachusetts, male citzen over 21
[This Elish Flandreau has a good chance of being the Elisha Flandreau of the 1883 Trow's Directory. An 1880 census for this family would be useful.]

And then there are the entries of Elijah the carpenter of New Rochelle:

1850 census of New Rochelle, Westchester County, p 319 [p160]:
dwelling 5, family 6
Elijah Flandreau, 49, Male, Carpenter, $1250 of real estate, born in New York
Ellen Flandreau, 34, Female, born in New Jersey
Jane Flandreau, 42, Female, born in New York
Augusta Flandreau, 14, Female, born in New York
Emma Flandreau, 12, Female, born in New York
John Flandreau, 8, Male, born in New York
Theodore Flandreau, 5, Male, born in New York

1860 census of New Rochelle, Westchester County, p 353 [p17]:
dwelling 2352, family 2608
Elijah Flandreau, 60, carpenter, $100 in personal property, born in New York
Ellen Flandreau, 45, female
Emma Flandreau, 22, female, Dressmaker
John Flandreau, 19, male
Julia M. Flandreau, 9, female
family 2609
Richard Mulhain, 61, male, farmer, $5000 in real estate, $500 personal property
Esther Mulhain, 50, female
Mary E. Mulhain, 20 female

1870 census of New Rochelle, Westchester, p 402 [p 13]:
Dwelling 96, family 102
Flandreau, Elijah, 70, male, white, carpenter, born in New York
Flandreau, Ellen, 50, female, keeps house, born in New Jersey
Flandreau, Julia, 19, female, white, at home, born in New York

1880 census of New Rochelle, Westchester, p 34 [36]:
Dwelling 270, family 306
Flandreau, Elijah, white, male, 78, carpenter, born in New York, father born in New York, mother born in New York
Ellen P. Flandreau, white, female, 64, wife of Elijah, keeping house, born in New Jersey, father born in England, mother born in New York
Theodore S. Flandreau, white, male, 35, son of Elijah, single, Engineer at saw mill, born in Connecticut, father born in New York, mother born in New Jersey
Julia Flandreau, white, female, 28, daughter of Elijah, dressmaker, born in New York, father born in New York, mother born in New Jersey

Maybe Chris can help clear all of this up...
