My name is Sherry Clark (nee Flatbush). I am the family historian. I was always told that Flatbush, NY was named after a relative. After writing to Mayor Koch in the early 1990's, I learned that the names Flatbush and Flatlands described the trees and land in that area. So, I made a promise to myself that I would find out the origin of our Flatbush clan before my paternal grandfather died, as he never knew any of his Flatbush relatives. Boy, did I ever find out.

My dad had said that he met a man with the last name of Flatbush while they were both in the military in California. My dad didn't remember the guy's name. However, I found the guy living in Oregan and I have been writing to his niece.

The family was always told that my paternal great-great grandfather, Stephen Flatbush, had several wives. My paternal grandfather's second cousin found a copy of Stephen Flatbush's Civil War pension papers. That opened a BIG can of worms. Stephen's real name was Staats or States Barton Flandreau.

Thank you all for your information, it has helped me alot.
