Well, one of the finds at the Westchester County Historical Society was letters from one Betty Jackson regarding her grandfather's stepfather, Rev. Daniel Alpheus Flandreau. His record in the database has been much expanded as a result.
Daniel had at least ten children by his first marriage (to Sally Reeves), two more by his second marriage, and then one more by his last marriage (to Jemema Walters). The last child died in infancy.
The children of the second marriage and Jemema's children from her first marriage (to Jonathan Pease) grew up together, and Mrs. Jackson cited family correspondence indicating how close the extended family of siblings, half-siblings, and step-siblings was.
She also gleaned from the correspondence the names of Daniel's siblings (James, Peter, Elijah, Mary, and William) and his father (Peter). I've been able to use that detail and other evidence in her letters and elsewhere, to connect several branches of the family together. This neatly connected all the Flandreau carriage-makers together -- not to mention the two Baptist clergy (Elder James and Daniel himself).
Other tantilizing clues in the family correspondence:
Augustus M.T. Flandreau, Daniel's son, writes his sister in 1899, asking for the Flandreau family bible that Jemema had naturally kept after Daniel's death. "Its value to me is great, as it contains our family record."
Daniel himself writes to his namesake, son Daniel A. Flandreau off at the Civil War: "Remember your grandfather of The Town of new rochelle, County of Westchester, State of New york, Peter Flandrau, Belonged to Mcdoughel Brigade in Washington's army & on account of indomitable courage & Bracery when engaged on the battlefield, they inherited the name, though a rough one, of Mcdougel's hellcats."
I've been unable to find rolls of Gen. Alexander McDoughall's brigade in order to try to locate Peter Flandreau. Perhaps someone can help me...
