Gloria,
After doing some digging on my own, I found a link (bottom of this response) which will give you as much as I could find and more.
Jared
NS VR:
Garfield H. Fleet m. Eveline Marks, 15-May-1912, at Halifax, Halifax Co, NS. He was 32, bachelor, CoE, and working as a bottler.Eveline was 20, spinster, CoE. He was born in Ecum Secum, NS to Henry and Lavinia. She was born in Ship Harbour to Martin and Katie.
Garfield died on 12-May-1943, at Halifax's V. G. Hospital. His death record indicates a birthdate of 23-Aug-1884, at Ecum Secum. His death records looks as if he might have died from burns, upon an examination of his body. Unfortunately, the only name on his death record in the parents section was his father, Henry. Garfield was buried Camp Hill Cemetery in Halifax on 14-May-1943. He was married as opposed to widowed in 1943.
Henry Fleet m. Lavinia Publicover at Ecum Secum, NS in Dec-1878, he was 21, bachelor, fisherman, she was 25, spinster, both born Ecum Secum.Henry was s/o Jacob and Anne, Lavinia was d/o Martin (Matthew?) and Nancy.
Henry b. @1857, Lavinia @1853.
Henry was single in 1881 census, residing Maria Joseph, Guysborough Co, NS.
Lavinia still single in 1881 Census, residing with Martin and Nancy.
Okay, what gives? They have a marriage record in 1878, yet they're single in 1881 Census records?Granted, "Lavina" is also living in Maria Joseph in 1881, but they SHOULD be living as a couple, if they were married three years prior.
INTERESTING to NOTE, however, is that in the VERY NEXt household from the PUBLICOVER family is Henry Fleet! Here's the two enumerations:
Dist 8, Sub Dist H page 26 household 130:
MARTIN PUBLICOVERMMaleGerman68Nova ScotiaFarmerChurch of England
NANCY PUBLICOVERMFemaleEnglish69Nova ScotiaChurch of England
JESSIE PUBLICOVERFemaleGerman29Nova ScotiaChurch of England
LAVINA PUBLICOVERFemaleGerman27Nova ScotiaChurch of England
Dist 8, Sub Dist H page 26 household 131:
HENRY FLEETMaleEnglish23Nova ScotiaFishermanChurch of England
So, they lived CLOSE to one another. That's taking separate bedrooms a bit far! Now, the census also fails to list Lavinia and Henry as "M" for married, so did they divorce then remarry? Was it just a case of bad enumeration?
I suppose, if one could look at the original record, perhaps it might offer some explanation. Henry MAY have been living in the very same house, and any number of reasons could exist for them being listed this way.
Lavinia is a widow by 1901, as indicated in the following 1901 Canada Census enumeration for Maria/Marie Joseph, Guysborough Co, NS:
8 462 Fleet Levina FHead W Jun 25 1854 46
8 562 Fleet Ruben MSon S Feb 22 1880 21
8 662 Fleet Lillian FDaughter S Apr 2 1881 19
8 762 Fleet Timothy MSon S May 12 1884 16
8 862 Fleet Sidney MSon S Sep 9 1886 14
8 962 Fleet Etta FDaughter S Mar 28 1888 13
8 1062 Publicover Nancy FMother W Feb 2 1809 92
8 1162 Baker Fannie FDomestic S May 26 1864 36
With Garfield (by death record) having been born 23-Aug-1884, the closest match above would be Timothy, but the dates don't seem to jive. This is OBVIOUSLY the same Lavinia who married Henry Fleet, but what about Garfield?Where is he in 1901/1911 records? I mean, there are Timothy and Reuben in plain sight. Was Garfield just looked over?
Might he have been adopted into the family at some point? If so, he's still not easy to find in 1901/1911.
Timothy's death record on 20-Sep-1953, indicates he was b. 12-May-1884, to Henry and "Alvina"
Apparently, in this timeframe in Ecum Secum/Marie Joseph area of Guysborough, the FLEET name was quite popular. There is also a "Fleets Settlement" in Guysborough County.
Jacob Fleet m. wife Ann around 1852, NS. He was b. @1827, NS.
Here they are in 1881 Canada Census for Nicumteouch, Halifax Co, NS:
Jacob FLEETMMaleGerman54Nova ScotiaFishermanChurch of England

James Abselom FLEETMaleGerman22Nova ScotiaFishermanChurch of England
George Eben FLEETMaleGerman14Nova ScotiaChurch of England
Malinda FLEETFemaleGerman12Nova ScotiaChurch of England
Olive FLEETFemaleGerman10Nova ScotiaChurch of England
(1) This entry crossed out by enumerator on original census form.
That information IS significant. Why? Because he's listed twice in census of 1881. Once with the Publicover family (or nearby) and once with his own family.Makes for some interesting research twists.
Melinda Fleet b. 22-Feb-1869, Ecum Secum to Jacob Fleet and Ann Pye.
George Eben Fleet, b. 19-Sep-1867, Ecum Secum, also shows mother as Ann Pye
Both daughters (Melinda and Olive) married PYE men.
Son James married Mary Pye, though it does NOT appear his brother George married a Pye. :-)
James Absolom Pye, d. 13-Aug-1923, aged 67, b. 22-Mar-1856, to Jacob Fleet and Ann Pye.
That SHOULD indicate, parents of Henry, who married Lavinia, were Jacob Fleet and Ann Pye.
Jacob, b. @1827, NS (have seen listed as late as 1830) and Ann, b. @1835, NS.
Probably married @1855.
Through other researches listings, it would appear (can't confirm w/o sources) that John Jacob Fleet was b. 11-May-1829, at Marie Joseph, to Michael Fleet and Mary Gates.
He married Anne Pye on 28-Jan-1855 in Ecum Secum.
One researcher shows a son, Albert, b. 30-Mar-1856 and a dau. Olive as Letitia Olive, b. 22-Feb-1871, Ecum Secum. At least the "Olive" fits.
Check out the following link, and contact the person who posted this information. That person posted a better family view, from what I can tell, and could probably lead you to your FLEET ancestry far better than I can. In fact, that person has details from Eveline Laura and Garfield, and their children, back through Jacob and Ann and beyond (earlier) - as far back as 1750s anyway.

That should probably be your next step.
