Ada,
I just received the complete 1880 US Census on CDROM.There are 534 listings of the FLESHMAN surname.However when you look under FLEISCHMANN or its variation there are 907 listings.
With the Americanized spelling as Fleshman I know of 2 different branches before 1800.One branch (Catholic)in Adams County, Pennsylvania and the other branch (Lutheran) in Culpeper/Madison Counties, Virginia.
After 1800 there are at least 2 immigrant families in Ohio
using the same spelling FLESHMAN.
If you look at the FLEISHMANN spelling or its varitions in 1880 there are over one hundred different families in which the head of the household was born in Europe.
So from what I can glean is that if your family was in this country prior to 1800 it is probably from either from the PA or VA group.However if later than 1800 the line could possible be traced to one of over 100 different FLEISCHMANN immigrants.
One really needs to get into the local records and do a thorough search to sort out all the different late arriving families.
Thanks,Stan
