My GG grandparents were Samuel Son of Jacob & Catherine Flickinger and Susan Flickinger daughter of Joseph & Catherine Ware.
Much of the information on the descendants of Dr. George Flickinger & Ester Arnold is from the Flickinger Family History published in 1927 and available on FHL film, etc. Most of the information is excellent. A review of the 1850 through 1920 census data however showed that many errors and assumptions were made when the book was compiled from the various Flickinger Family notes. The census data for Alleghany Twp, Somerset Co., PA; Pleasant/Walnut Twps, Fairfield Co., OH; Congress/Chester Twps, Wayne Co., OH; Jackson/Montgomery Twps, Ashland Co., OH and Big Grove Twp, Benton Co., IA should be carefully searched and even browsed line by line for our Flickinger, Geiger, Ware, Howman and Covington ancestors. Some of the name search engine indexes have omissions.
In doing so, I found that Joseph and Michael Flickinger had moved from PA to IA by the 1860 census but Samuel's parents Jacob & Catherine Switzer Flickinger were still in Somerset Co. PA in 1860, not IA. By the 1870 census, they were farming in Big Grove Twp, Benton Co., IA with Samuel's daughter Catherine-12 in the household. My G Grandparents John C. Covington and Catherine Flickinger were married December 9, 1875 in Benton Co. IA.
In the 1860 census Samuel, wife Susan Ware and Catherine-2 were farming in Alleghany Twp, Somerset Co.,PA. Daughters Mary and Christine were born in PA in July 1860 and 1863. Son William was born in OH in 1865. By the 1870 census Susan, Christine and William were living with Susan's parents in Pleasantville, Fairfield Co. OH. Susan Flickinger 'Wife of Samuel' died April 3, 1906 and is buried in the Geiger Family Cemetery in Pleasantville with her brother Simon and both parents. Samuel likely died between 1865 & 1870 and may also be buried in this badly damaged cemetery. In 1870 Samuel's daughter Mary (May) Ann-9 was being raised by her aunt & uncle Joseph E. and Elizabeth Flickinger Geiger in Congress Twp, Wayne Co., OH. Six years later she married David Howman and they started farming in Chester Twp Wayne Co. and by the 1880 census had son Clinton who was 3. I still have to sort out Christina and William's families.
As you can see, there were many errors surrounding Jacob's and Samuel's families in the book so further research is needed before taking this 1927 publication as all fact. Hopefully these errors are not being passed on further through FHL and Ancestry.com files.
One of my Helm/Bruggerman/Covington cousins very kindly sent me a framed studio portrait of Susan Ware Flickinger with her four children and their spouses. It was taken by the Foreman Studio, Lancaster OH, probably in March 1905 when Susan's father Joseph died and was buried in Pleasantville. I would be happy to scan and e-mail a copy of it to any interested Flickinger/Geiger/Covington/Howman cousins. Some of the Geiger Cemetery stones including Susanís are on-line at http://www.graveaddiction.com/geiger.html
