Hi Marie,
I am interested in your Florence family or what you might know about the Phipps.We may have chatted before.My Mark Golden and wife Nancy (Golden) Parks were in Lincoln Co., GA during the same time.They adopted three of the children of Joseph Phipps (listed in the family bible).Have wondered if Milly (second wife of Joseph) was a Golden or Parks. She had no children by Joseph.Mark Golden & family moved to Chambers Co., AL, by 1837, and may have stopped in Troup and/or Talbot Co., GA, along the way while the three Phipps children, Newell, Amanda, and William stayed in Troup.I see that Elbert Phipps was in the 1830 Lincoln Co., GA census near Obidiah Florence, Jr. and Allen Frazer.
Returns A, p. 135 Troup County Georgia
Date 8 July 1833
Executioners: John Phipps and Milly Phipps
Exemplification of the will and division of the estate of Josiah(Joseph?)Phipps of Lincoln County, Georgia, 1825-1831.
Widow: Milly Phipps;
Children: Robert, Thomas, Newell G., Amanda, Elbert, William, John;
Witness to will: William Mathews, Lewis Turner, William Arrant;
Security for guardianship bond: Mark Golden;
Slaves: Harry, Louisa, Ginny, Nancy, Eveline;
Appraisers: William Park(s?), James N. Harper, John McDowell, Shadrack Turner, Thomas Murray.
Thomas Mosley sold land to a John Golden, Sr., of Wilkes Co., GA on Great Soap Creek in 1789.John had a son, William, and daughter Milly who married a Smith.I believe that Lincoln County was created around 1792/96.Mark Golden lived on Soap Creek in 1800, and after his first wife died, married John's granddaughter, Nancy Golding Parks(dau. of William Golden ?).Nancy must have married a Parks first.Shadrack Turner's daughter,Polly, married John Golden, Sr.'s son William Golden.My brick wall is were my Mark Golden came from before GA and what relationship he might have had with this John Golden, Sr.
Mark's oldest known son, Seaborn (my ancestor) moved to Tallapoosa Co., AL, by 1840 and lived in a place called "Obid" - would that be short for Obidiah?
The family story is that Seaborn's mother was Indian lady.I have not found anything to document this except that some of the older decendants reported that they were of Indian heritage.
Anything you have to add would be appreciated.
Anita
