Your John Florida has a possibility of being my 2ndGGF. I just found your message on the 24th (of August) and I noted some very interesting similarities. (My John Florida was brother to my grandfather, Albert.)
∑ Our family lore has it that the family name was Flaherty before being changed after records were lost and some official couldnít spell and arbitrarily chose Florida.
∑ Our Florida has some misspelling, one of which was Floridia. I canít seem to find the other misspellings at the moment. (I think it was connected to my GGM being listed as Florinda J. in her fatherís household after her marriage.)
∑ There are connections to Canada and New York. An obituary, which I suspect was heavily contributed to by my grandaunt, has Johnís father born in Canada. All the censuses I have found have Johnís father born in New York, and his grandmother in Canada.
∑ There is a military record (Civil War) that has a cross reference to Flaherty; also a pension record that links my GGF to my GGM.
May I send you a GEDCOM file? I would start with my 2ndGGF, currently in my AFT database as Unknown Florida (m. to Unnamed Unknown) and take it through the 4th generation to include Johnís nieces and nephews. I havenít found any wife or children for John.
