The name is spelled various ways, probably depending on the clerk writing the records heard the name pronounced. As you can see, in some records it is spelled Oflaherty , Olforiday, and Flaharty. In many of the records it is Floriday/Flority or some variation of that. By the time they got to TN it was fairly consistent Florida.
His wife Cassander Allison is believed to be a sister to my ancestor William Allison.
It would appear the name was originally Oflaherty or Flaherty, and with southern accents evolved into Flority/Floriday to Florida, a name known to people because of the state. It appears to be a similar thing that some Kennedy families evolved into the surname Canada.
