Daniel Wilson Floyd - (1895-1947)
I need help with this family. Daniel was the Son of Charles Wilson Floyd and Annie Viola Turner. He married Orpie, last name unknown, born about 1901. Some say she was a Herring. Daniel and Orpie had two Children. Dempsie was born in 1918 and Hazel Viola was born in 1919. I say this because the 1920 Census, enumerated 21 January 1920, shows the family living in Sterling Township in Robeson County, NC. Dempsey is listed as 18 months old and Hazel as 2 months old. I cannot seem to locate a birth certificate for either one.
In 1930, at the age of 12, Dempsey is in Concord, Cabarrus County, NC. Not with family, but an Inmate at Stonewall Jackson Training School. He is listed as Dempsey S. Floyd. I was always told that his name was Daniel Dempsey Floyd. I also know that Dempsey served a prison sentence in the State of Texas. I remember reading his Parole Papers many years ago. I think it was in the fifties.
My Grandfather, deceased, told me that he thought Hazel committed suicide in Ohio. I have a picture of Dempsey and Hazel that was developed at Willard's in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. This picture could have been taken anywhere and mailed for processing. However, they appear to be in their late teens or early twenties and are standing in front of a wood framed house in the snow. I have never met Hazel or heard anyone in the family mention her other than my Grandfather. I can locate no information on her.
Dempsey was in California in the late sixties and returned to Robeson County in about 1968. He lived with us for several months and said he was going back to California. We received a post card from Reno, Nevada about two weeks after he left. We've never heard from him again.
There is a couple of possibilities on the Social Security Death Index but nothing concrete.
If anyone has any information on this family, please help!
Mark
