Mrs. Jennie Fluke ~ Osceola, Iowa
The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, March 23, 1905
Fifty years ago on the 22d of March, in the old Hoozier State, JOHN GOLTRY and BARBARA MCGILL were united in the holy bonds of wedlock, locating in Cedar Township, Lucas County, Iowa, soon afterwards. They chose for their home a wild tract of land which they improved and continued to reside thereon until within the past few years when they purchased a house in town and moved to Russell. In their old country home twelve children were born to them and it is a remarkable fact that all have grown to manhood and womanhood and have establishments of their own, and death has not once entered the portals to bring gloom to the parental hearts.
The only ones attending on Wednesday besides the children were JACOB and EMELINE GOLTRY, who were present at the wedding fifty years ago (JOHN and JACOB GOLTRY being brothers), W.D. SIMPSON, SAMUEL BOYD, FRANZ COPELAND, sons-in law, and the several daughters-in-law, HERBERT PARKHURST also twenty-eight grandchildren. MR. GOLTRY is at present 73 years of age and his wife is 69. The combined age of the family is 578 years. The oldest child 48, the youngest 24.
This happy reunion was the first for many years and the joys of the occasion may be imagined. There was merriment and recalled memories and recountings of incidents of the past -- and the pardonable pride of the father and mother, for few families have the record of domestic harmony, thrift and integrity in life's affairs that this one has. Then came the dinner -- it was sumptuous and elaborate -- but that is not the greatest feature. Seated at it were father, mother and the twelve sons and daughters as in the former days, happy in the ties of family unity.
And thus we leave them and will not disturb their tranquility or talk of separation. The children are: MRS. OLLIE WEST, Fullerton, Neb.; S. JOHN JR.; JOE and FRED, of Cedar Township; MRS. ARVILLA SIMPSON, Chariton; MRS. CLARA DAHLMAN, Kansas; MRS. WINNIE COPELAND, Des Moines; MRS. JENNIE FLUKE, Osceola; C.F. GOLTRY, Agency; MRS. MYRTLE PEPPERS, Harrisonville, Mo.; MRS. ALTA BOYD, Russell.
