Patricia, Philemon Owen of Talbot County did have a son named William J. Owen, and I think he was the person who married Elizabeth Crawford. Philemon died intestate, but many years ago, a friend who lived in Atlanta, looked up his estate records for me. He seems to have had only three surviving children: William J. Owen, Robert E. Owen, and a daughter who was married to William M. Crawford.
Talbot County Annual Returns Bk. A, pgs. 246 and 247. September 7, 1840, William J. Owens appointed guardian of Robert E. Owens. On page 365, William M. Crawford, administrator of Philamon Owen, distributed the estate - Each of the three named persons (William J. Owen, Robert E. Owen, and William M. Crawford) was due $6,458.33. They were termed "legatees," which should indicate that there was a will, but if there was one, it seems not to have been probated.
Robert E. Owen married Caroline Crittenden in Talbot County, February 18, 1841.
I have been told that the William M(artin) Crawford who was married to Philemon's daughter had
a sister, Betsy Ann Crawford (b. 1809) who married "W. H. Owen."
I feel sure, but cannot prove, that Philemon was the son of Augustus/Augustine Owen and his wife Elizabeth (--------). Their other children were Robert (d. in Chambers Co., Ala. in 1850), Jacob (d. in Jasper Co., Ga. in the 1820s) and Elizabeth who married William COCHRAN and migrated to Jefferson Co., Ala., then to Fayette Co., Tenn., and finally, to Marshall Co., Miss. The Cochrans are my ancestors.
