Mary:

William J. Owen married Elizabeth Anne Crawford in Greene County, GA on October 18, 1825. There were two other marriages about the same time that I suspected might be those of his brother and sister: John Owen married Nancy Woods on December 5, 1822 (witness was Henry Slaughter) and Mary H. Owen who married Isaac Knowles on March 25, 1824. William J. was probably born about 1804 and Elizabeth about 1809. (Elizabeth's age is calculated based on her reported age in the 1860 census.) When William died in 1855, J.T. Crawford and Elizabeth, his wife, were named as executors and the witnesses were W.M. Crawford and T.(L?) S. Crawford. If you are interested in William J.'s family, I can give you quite a bit of information about them. I am descended from Julia Owen, one of William and Elizabeth's 8 or so children.

I am very intrigued to find that Philemon had a son who had not yet achieved his majority when Philemon died in 1839. That gives us an approximate date for Betsy's death, and certainly raises the possibility that other children were born between William J. and Robert E. but did not survive to 1839.

I suppose you have found the Deed of Gift from Elizabeth Porter to her children Philemon Owen, Jacob Owen, Robert Owen and Elizabeth who married William Cotchran.( May 28, 1806, Deed Book E, p.165, Oglethorpe County Wills) The witnesses were Benjamine Baldwin and John Cargile.

I appreciate your help and the documentation from the Talbot County records. Hope the Fluker folks won't mind so much that we have strayed from Fluker to Owen.

Patricia Spencer Maher
