Hi Margene, Well there are still some of us of the Fogarty family living in the area but none under the Fogarty surname.
His parents were Denis Fogarty and a McCarty woman. His grandparents were Daniel Fogarty and a Flood woman. The Fogartys were from Lakamore County Tipperary,(I dont know if that was the townsland near Nenagh or the parish near Thurles) but most of their neighbors in Poultney were from the parish of Castletown near Nenagh. They were all slate quarrymen He had three sisters who died within a month of each other when they were little girls circa 1873. the family plot is in St.Marys Cem Fair Haven Vermont.
This John Fogarty was a first cousin of my grandmother Bridget O'Brien, whos mother was Bridget Fogarty O'Brien,Denis'sister (Have I lost you yet?)
Anyway there is a woman in Poultney ,Peggy Forbes who is granddaughter of John Fogarty's brother and would be thrilled to hear from you. She has a trove of Fogarty lore and is aware of the Butte connection (even the Miss Montana bit!) and has wondered what became of your branch.
Im less directly related but mad for stories of the old Irish families of the area and where they went, let alone the ones Im related to,so Peggy and I will have to fight over you!
One small point: this posting might give you the wrong impression that this area is crawling with Fogarty descendants who can all quote chapter and verse about family history. Not really, although there are technically quite a few descendants around most of them are clueless.
Peggy and I are just a couple of odd ducks,Im 48 Peggy is .....older.
Bye for now ,
