I would go with the Tipperary connection. I think it a more likely place name to say you come from and the Leinster connection probably half remembered from something else (mother- grandfather?). The problem then becomes is it Tipperary Town or County? I would initially plump for County because (my father being a Tip man!) I think people probably make the distinction between Tipperary (as county) and Tipperary Town. Although having said that the son as informant obviously thought it was a town!!
What kind of date are you talking about here? Are there no clues in cenusus information or ships manifests?
I have census information for Nenagh in 1901 & 11.
