My mother was a Fogg and I am trying to trace my earliest Fogg ancestor James Fogg who was born in 1809 in Lancaster,Lancastershire (according to the 1841 Scotland census but that is my only source)
James was a Flax Dresser. He married Margaret Banks in 1832 in Dunfermline. Dunfermline had a large linen industry at that time which is probably why James had moved there. In 1841 England census he was living in Fewston,in Yorkshire with his family in Mill Cottage. There was a Flax Mill in Fewston at the time, so that was possibly why he was there. He returned to Dunfermline where he now has descendants in Dunfermline and Paisley. His children were James, George, Ann and Edwin.James and George were born in Dunfermline and Edwin in Yorkshire.
In the 1841 England census there were alot of Foggs born in Scotland but living in Birkenhead. I suspect they may be related.
I am interested to confirm where James may have been born and any information on his ancestors. I am also interested in why he may have moved to Scotland from Lancashire (a bit of a journey in those days!) Any help would be appreciated.
