My grandmother was a Turney. I was told that her name on her birth certificate was Foppianna and when her grandfather came here from Italy he was an organ grinder and people called him Turney so the family changed their names to Turney. I am curious if my grandmother and your husband are from the same family. Here is what info I know.
My grandmothers name was Margie Dee Turney Smith, she married Jonah Matthew Smith. They lived in Surry County, Pilot Mountian specifacally. He was a tabacco farmer for years and she worked for Surry Industries/Armatex. They had 4 children Carol, Cathy, Crysta (my mom) and Dennis. My grandmothers mother died of breast cancer when she was 40ish and my grandmother was only 14 when her mother passed. Her father re-married but I dont know any of their names. I could get them from my mom though. I do know my grandmother had a sister named Grace, a sister named Hassey and I think a brother named Eb. Possibly more all I am going on right now are stories I have heard growing up. Anyways if any of this information or any of these names sound familiar please contact me. I would love to get more information. Thanks bunches Tonya my email is
