Thank you for replying. We have a copy of the same Wheeler County history. If you take a look at the biographies for Sergius and William Richards those are my husband's grandfather and great grandfather. William "Billy" married Mary Foppiano, Stephen's daughter. Mary emigrated with her father in 1879/1880. She was born in 1862 so Stephen had to have been born closer to 1840, maybe earlier. We don't have her mother's name or any facts about her father's death.
My father and mother-in-law visited Rapallo, Italy a few years ago and there were Foppianos everywhere, but they were not able to overcome the language barrier! My email is grantandannette@hotmail.com
