It may be from the name "Forbes." I research the Forbis family which traces back to the Scottish surname Forbes.Often, I see my ancestors' names spelled "Forbus."Although today we pronounce "Forbes" with one syllable, it was originally pronounced with two syllables in Scotland which would affect its phonetic spelling in American records. It can be traced to Ireland, as well, through Scottish settlers there (the Scots-Irish)."Forbes" is also an anglicized verson of the Irish Mac Fearbhisigh, but Scottish Forbes is your better bet.(See Patricia Hanks & Flavia Hodges A DICTIONARY OF SURNAMES, Oxford Univ Press, 1988)
