Fawson/Forson, alternate spellings

Researching the Fawson family of UK, currently detail back to 1500 in UK. One branch of the family (Northamptonshire, UK) appear to have changed the spelling of the name to Forson in 1776, following a gruesome and well documented murder and subsequent execution, and then disappear fron the UK. Many present day Fawson's in UK, attempting to understand how and why the Fawson's appear in South Carolina in 1778. Any help gratefully appreciated
