In the New Dictionary of American Family Names by Elsdon C. Smith and pub. by Harper & Row in 1973, it states:
Fortson (English) The son of the strong man.
I am searching for information on a great-grandmother, Susan Elizabeth Fortson. She was born about 1806 and lived in Missouri during her marriage to Bazil Davis Freeman. They fled to Illinois during the Civil War. She died there (1861-1865) and is buried in an unknown location. B.D. Freeman married again and returned to Missouri after 1865. He died in Webster Co., Missouri, May 06, 1885.
