Hi. I do not know what I am seeking anymore. I read your posting and wonder if your A.J. Fortson who bought land from Peter Davis Wynne Jr. in 1860 was Andrew Jackson Fortson or my Aaron J. Fortson? I have found several land records with Aaron J. Fortson as buyer, and La. was one of the states. I know that both Aaron J. Fortson b. 1816 Elberton, Ga. son of William George Fortson and Ann Higginbotham and Aarons' son Jeptha M. Fortson were in La. during the Civil War where Aaron J. was wounded and imprisoned twice and released. I have found this in several books. Jeptha M. Fortson's pardon and travel papers were signed in DeSota Parish, La. and Shreveport, La. after the war. I have never found Aaron J. Fortsons' papers.
In the 1880 census in Van Zandt Co.Tx. Aaron J. is living with Jeptha M. Fortson family as an invalid. I have been told that Aaron J. Fortson was born invalid. Aaron J. died after the 1880 census supposedly in Van Zandt Co.Tx.
On Jeptha M. Fortsons pardon papers in the state of Texas records when he applied for a pension, there are handwritten notes on the back of papers obviously folded and carried in a back pocket and Capt. A.J. Fortson is listed, Aaron J. Fortsons name is listed and a woman named Addiebelle Fortson, residence Dallas.
Jeptha M. Fortson (Monroe?) is supposed to have married (1) unknown and had stilborn child (unknown) before he married
Margaret Eliz. Riley in 1871. I have never been able to pin that information down in any of the lists.
I assume you know all about Roger Bartletts list of Fortsons since he defines all the lineage of Rachel and Elizabeth, Ann Cocke, etc....very detailed.
I guess I want a burial place and a death date for Jeptha M. Fortson and don't seem to find it in Texas. Perhaps, La. is where I should search. Gregg Co.Texas where he was in the 1910 census is only 60 miles from Shreveport. Thank you for your reply. Carol Jones
