Might FOTHERGILL and SOTHERGILL have been interchangebale spellings of the same family name way back when? There was a SOTHERGILL family in Leeds, England as recently as 1891 and lots of SMITHERGILLS were in Lincolnshire as early as the 16th century. In 18th century Ireland SOTHERGILL and SMOTHERGILL were alternate spellings of the same family name.
