Starting Sept. 30, 2014, Genealogy.com will be making a big change. GenForum message boards, Family Tree Maker homepages, and the most popular articles will be preserved in a read-only format, while several other features will no longer be available, including member subscriptions and the Shop.

Another program that is pretty good is Personal Ancestral File (PAF). PAF is free and can be found at

http://www.familysearch.org/

Select Preserve your Genealogy to get to the download.

Most programs can exchange data using files in GEDCOM format. Current programs all support GEDCOM export and import for most data fields, so you can convert to a different program later on.
