Hello,

I just wanted to update a few items in this posting. The William Hargis given as bondsman for the marriage of Elizabeth Fooshe and John Jay, was married to Elizabeth Jay, sister to John Jay who married Elizabeth Fooshee. Another Hargis brother, Thomas Lee Hargis, was married to Bridget Van Hook of the same family as Kindle Van Hook who listed Adnah Campbell Foushee as a legatee in his will.

I did locate John Foushee and his wife, Elizabeth listed as John Foshe in the Census of 1800 for Person County, NC. They had a daughter and a son under the age of 10. Adnah Campbell Foushee was born 5 March 1801; so he was not included in that family of 1800.

I am pretty convinced that Charles was a brother of John Foushee who, with wife, Elisabeth, were early members of the Flat River Primitive Baptist Church; as were Charles Fooshee/Fache. John and Elizabeth Foushee may have moved westward with some of their elder children, after Adnah was old enough to marry and begin his own family. I still find it very curious that Alexander Foushee, who provided so many insights into many other Person County families in his Remembrances, did not mention his own origins within the Foushee family, save the connection to his father.

From what I have found about Charles Fooshee, he was married second to a Martha Pullium, daughter of John Pullium whose wife may have been Sarah Foushee. Since he married her in Person County prior to the move to the Pendleton District, it seems likely that other Foushees were in the area as well. It would appear that the Foushee/Fooshee family was of French Huguenot descent, and most likely from the settlement of Foushees found in Culpeper County, VA.

Best regards,

John Fox
