Foushees, Jays, and now Graves

Hello Descendants of Charles Fooshee/Foushee and his first wife, Elizabeth -?- through their daughter, Elizabeth Fooshee Jay, and their other daughter Susannah Fooshee Allen.

I am attempting to locate the identity of a Thomas Graves whose will was probated in the February Court of 1812 in Person County, NC. Although I do not have a direct attachment to the Graves family, I do have several cousins who do have that lineage.

The will was dated 29 February 1808 and mentioned his wife, Nancy; Charles Fooshee Jay; other children of Elizabeth Jay, wife of John Jay; children of Susannah Allen, wife of Stokes Allen. He named his executors as his wife, Robert Stanfield and Stokes Allen. This all caught my interest because I am a Jay descendant, and I do have lots of cousins who descend from Foushees.

Elizabeth Jay and Susannah Allen were sisters, both Fooshees, daughters of Charles Fooshee, who had lived for a while in Caswell County, and his first wife, Elizabeth -?-. I have seen it speculated that Elizabeth -?- was a Graves, brought about by the fact that Elizabeth Fooshee Jay and her husband, John Jay, had named a son, Barzilla Graves Jay. The aforementioned will of Thomas Graves seems to add more data pointing very strongly in that direction. I can see no other reason for this Thomas Graves focusing most of his bequests upon the children of these two sisters. If this Thomas is a brother of Barzilla Graves, then this could be further evidence to add to the proponderance that is now growing.

The first wife of Charles Fooshee must have died relatively early into their marriage, as these two daughters were the only surviving offspring of it. Charles married secondly to a Martha Pullium, daughter of John Pullium and his wife, Sarah Fooshee. It is thought that Martha was a cousin of Charles Fooshee. The Allen and Jay descendants of these two sisters should be able to claim their Graves ancestry.

I would be interested in hearing from some of you researchers if this is of interest, and you have data which might further respond to this theorum.

Very best regards,

John Fox
