CHARLOTTE | John Giles Foushee, 84, died Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, at Presbyterian Hospital. A service of tribute will be held Dec. 14, 2002, at 11 a.m. in the Terry Chapel of Dilworth United Methodist Church by the Rev. Dr. Frank H. "Duke" Ison. Mr. Foushee was born July 28, 1918, in Guilford County to Eugene Dick Foushee and Flavia Holt Foushee. His childhood was spent partly in Greensboro and partly in central Florida where he developed a lifelong enjoyment of fishing. He graduated from the N.C. State College of Agriculture and Engineering in 1942 with a bachelor of civil engineering degree. While working toward this degree, he also worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority through a student cooperative program. Following graduation from N.C. State, Mr. Foushee worked for the U.S. Navy in Puerto Rico as a civilian inspector. In 1943, he entered the U.S. Army as a captain and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was also part of the occupation force in Japan following the war. Mr. Foushee returned to North Carolina in 1946 and in December of that year met his future wife, Mildred Leonard, at a Christmas dance in Welcome. They were married June 7, 1947, and then moved to Chapel Hill where Mr. Foushee pursued additional education. He received a master of science degree in sanitary engineering in 1948 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Mr. and Mrs. Foushee then moved to Charlotte where he worked for the health department using his skills to devise and implement fluoridation of the Charlotte water system in 1949. This was the largest water system in the U.S. to be fluoridated up to that date. Mr. Foushee qualified as a professional engineer in 1956 and joined the engineering firm of Charles T. Main in Charlotte. During his career he provided consulting engineering services for the municipal water systems in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and Rome, Italy. He was a member of The National Society of Professional Engineers and the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry. Mr. Foushee was an avid tennis player, having played collegiately at N.C. State. He shared this love of tennis with his four sons. He enjoyed traveling and had a great sense of adventure. Mr. Foushee never tired of learning about the world around him. An honest and gentle man, he was devoted to his family. The sweetness of his nature was unique. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Mildred Leonard Foushee; four sons, Dr. John Giles Foushee Jr. and his wife, Ruth Buker Foushee, of Charlotte and their sons, John Giles Foushee III and Madison Steele Foushee, David Leonard Foushee and his wife, Susan Lacko Foushee, of Coeur dŽAlene, Ind., and their children, Jessica Jean Foushee and Michael Leonard Foushee, Dr. Robert Holt Foushee and his wife, Dr. Deborah Galle Foushee, of Charlotte and their daughter, Margaret Wright Foushee, and James Alfred Foushee of Stanley; his sister, Mary Ann Burroughs of Kinston; and his brother, Eugene Dick Foushee of Bluff, Utah.
