Thanks for the message. I have searched high and low for other information regarding Jean Lesage and Marguerite Roussel. One very good location for searching is called "pistard" under the address www.banq.qc.ca. There you can find the copy of the marriage contract of Jean Baptiste Lesage and Marie Josephe De Gerlaise by doing a simple search under Jean Baptiste Lesage. Be careful not to mix him up with another Jean Baptiste son of Bernardin Lesage. These archives are really useful to find all kinds of notarial data, but also court orders and decisions of the Conseil souverain - the ruling body at the time under the governor.
Unlike many of the inhabitants, Jean Lesage kept really quiet, because he is not named in any of these extremely extensive archives.
As for returning to France, it was the hypothesis of Caroline Hamelin author of the "Memorial des familles". She only had the transcript of the religious marriage, where it is not written that Jean Baptiste's parents had already died.
My interpretation is that if they had returned to France, the location would have been disclosed in the contract. By only writing that they had lived in Quebec, it is inferred that it is where they died.
The search is on to find data about their marriage and the birth of Jean Baptiste, somewhere in France...
Most Roussel and Lesage families are in Normandy or the North. None of the current databases have showed a couple by that name in the approximate time period. Jean Baptiste is estimated to have been born around 1674 based on his age at death. Therefore we are looking for marriage from about 1660 on.
