In much of the genealogical research that has been done on Michael L. Francisco (1781-1869), the younger son of Levi Francisco (1757-1844) and his first wife, Sarah VAN DER COOK (1759-circa 1785), a very shaky attribution can be found for a second marriage to Sarah "Sally" Maria FRENCH (1795-1872) of Yates Co., NY. (Sally was the widow of Calvin TWITCHELL.) According to an Ontario Co. history, Sally, speaking to a local historian, describes her second husband as Michael L. Francisco, an elderly Revolutionary War soldier. According to the following data, her assertion is most definitely a false one. 1850 US Census for the Town of Middlesex, Yates Co., NY Page Number: 30A Dwelling Number: 35 Family Number: 35 Michael J. FRANCISCO 54 M NY Sarah M. FRANCISCO 53 F NY Andrew FRENCH 18 M NY This would mean that the Michael Francisco who married Sally French would have been born circa 1796...far to late for him to have fought in the Revolutonary War or possibly even the War of 1812. Michael L.'s father, Levi, is known to have fought in the Revolution with the 14th Regiment of New York Militia (Colonel Peter Yates' Regiment). I have been told that Michael L. fought in the War of 1812 with a NY regiment, but have yet to find any evidence that bears this out. Although there is much early data missing for Michael L., enough remains to thoroughly discredit Sally French Francisco's claim. First of all, Michael L., his wife Charlotte (CHURCHILL) and various household members are enumerated in the 1850 US Census for Oakland Twp., Jefferson Co., WI as follows: 1850 US Census for Oakland Twp., Jefferson Co., WI 2 395 409 Michael Francisco 69 M Farmer 800 New York 3 395 409 Charlotte Francisco 61 F Connecticut 4 395 409 Phebe Heath 34 F Connecticut 5 395 409 Wellington Case 25 M New York 6 395 409 Chas. Green 43 M farmer 150 New York 7 395 409 Hannah Hall 25 F New York Charlotte Francisco died in Ft. Atkinson, WI on 15 August, 1855 and lies buried in the Evergreen Cemetery there. At some point after that, Michael L. removed to Michigan to live with a son, Charles Francisco (1807-1874) and family in Grattan Twp., Kent Co. Michael L. Francisco died there on 19 November, 1869 at the advanced age of 88 and lies buried in the Alton Cemetery, Vergennes Twp., Kent Co., MI. Although his death record reads Michael S., his headstone is inscribed M. L. Francisco. FRANCISCO, MICHAELS Date of death: 19-Nov-1869 Ledger Page: 328 Record Number: 7 Place of death: Grattan County of Death: Kent Sex: Male Race: WHITE Marital Status: Married Age: 88 years 7 months 17 days Cause of Death: DRY GANGRENE Birthplace: NY Occupation: FARMER Father's Name: Francisco, LEVI Father's Residence: DECEASED Mother's Name: FRANCISCO, SARAH Mother's Residence: DECEASED Date of record: 7-Jun-1870 (This record was obtained through the Michigan Department of Community Health GENDIS Online Index.) According to these few but telling records, Michael L. Francisco (1781-1869) never remarried after his wife's death nor did he ever return to New York. Now if someone can tell me who the Michael J. Francisco was who married Sally French Twitchell, I'd be very grateful. Notify Administrator about this message?
