I am transcribing some notes on France family genealogy left by a woman who died in 1957. This is one of the notations.
"Ralph France of Springfield was in World War One. He was in battle behind a trench facing the Germans. His superior officer was yellow (cowardly) and fled – left his men being slaughtered by the Germans. Ralph’s buddy began calling “France! Take over!”
He did! They routed the Germans and won the battle. After the war, the county of France presented Ralph with the Decoration of France for his bravery in taking over. This consisted of : (Some of these medals/decorations are U.S., one is Belgian)
1. Fourragére
2. Purple Heart (U.S.)
3. Croix de Guerre (Belgian)
4. Silver Star (U.S.)
Ralph came out of the war with white hair. He was wounded once. While in the hospital, his Bible, pictures of home folks and purse with all his money vanished." This is how his name was listed in Aunt Molly’s Bible Family Records.
