I now have a new laptop and have finally sorted out the connection issues - any way I think I have suggested before that the Lancs line may well have connections with my Wilts line as the Wilts family was Catholic and Lancs was one of the Catholic centres. Well we had supposed that the family worked as builders for the Arundel family at Wardour but I discovered that in the 1500's that there was a shortage of shepherds in England and that shepherds were recruited from Germany.. so maybe 'Fray' comes from the continental 'Frey'. I am having trouble trying to take the Lancs line back far enough as it realy needs a trip to the records office in Preston... 6hrs drive away (on a good day). Did you get anywhere with the Kirkmans?
By the way James's cousin Enoch (son of Ellis) appears in The Times newspaper in 1867. He had been giving his sons William and Arthur false references for good positions where they immediately stole what they could. Enoch & his wife Elizabeth were both alive in 1881 but she was living with her younger children (working as a confectioner) and he was in lodgings (working as a storekeeper). I'm not sure what happened to William & Arthur...prison?, hung?, sent to Australia? or even Canada? Are there any family stories about boys being sent away?
The name Arthur is used again in the next generation so presumeably the family blamed Enoch rather than the boys.
Sorry I took so long. This is the first evening I've got on to the net with this laptop!
Hope all are well
